Gothic 1 Remake: Supported Languages

Also known as: Gothic 1 Remake localization

Gothic 1 Remake ships with localization for ten languages in text, interface and subtitles, and full voice acting in four of those ten. The language selection reflects both the franchise’s European origins under Piranha Bytes and its expanded global audience, with the inclusion of Japanese and Simplified Chinese representing significant new markets compared to earlier entries in the Gothic series.

Text and Subtitle Languages

The ten languages supported for interface text and subtitles are: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese (Brazil). These cover the core Western European and Eastern European markets that have historically formed the Gothic fanbase, while the inclusion of Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese reflects THQ Nordic’s broader localization strategy for major global territories. Players choosing any of these ten languages receive translated menus, on-screen prompts, quest text, item descriptions and subtitle tracks for all voiced dialogue in the game.

Full Voice Acting Languages

Full audio — meaning every line of dialogue is recorded in that language — is available in English, German, Polish and Russian. German is the most historically significant of the four: Gothic was created by the German studio Piranha Bytes, and the original 2001 game was produced with German as its primary development language before being dubbed into English for international release. The franchise has always had its deepest cultural roots in the German-speaking market, and the German audio track in the remake carries an authenticity that is difficult to replicate in other dubs. Polish and Russian audio tracks reflect the franchise’s strong fan communities in Eastern Europe, particularly in Poland, where Gothic has maintained a dedicated following since the early 2000s. English audio serves the global English-speaking market and most players in text-only localization territories.

Language Coverage for Non-Audio Territories

Players who choose one of the six text-only languages — French, Italian, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Japanese or Portuguese (Brazil) — receive the full translated text experience with subtitles running over one of the four available audio tracks. In practice, most players in these regions select the English audio track, though any of the four dubbed languages can be paired with any subtitle language. This flexibility means the localization serves a wider audience than a stricter language-pairing system would allow.

The Composer and Audio Continuity

One significant element of the audio production that extends beyond localization is the involvement of Kai Rosenkranz, who composed the original Gothic soundtrack in 2001 and returned to score the remake. His involvement ensures musical continuity between the two games, and his digital soundtrack was made available as a pre-order bonus for PC buyers. The breadth of text language support — ten languages compared to the narrower range of the 2001 original — means Gothic 1 Remake is accessible to a substantially wider player base at launch, continuing THQ Nordic’s practice of broad localization for major franchise releases.
