Waran

Також відомий як: Varan, Monitor Lizard

The Waran is one of the Valley of Mines’ most recognisable predators — a large, monitor-lizard-like reptile that hunts across the rocky slopes, forest clearings and sunlit outcroppings between the three camps. Smaller and less armoured than the fearsome Snapper, the Waran compensates with speed and aggressiveness, darting in to deliver a quick bite before withdrawing to circle and attack again. Its ambush-and-retreat pattern is deceptively dangerous for unprepared fighters who expect a straightforward brawl.

Habitat and Behaviour

Warans are distributed broadly across the Colony. They appear near the Old Camp’s eastern approaches, along the forest trails leading toward the Free Mine, and in the rougher terrain separating the three camps. They are often encountered in pairs or small clusters, which can turn a single nuisance into a serious threat if the Hero is already injured or engaged with another foe. Unlike passive creatures such as moles or lizards, Warans actively hunt and will pursue a fleeing target until either caught or left far behind.

Their attack pattern is distinctive: a quick dart forward, a biting strike and an immediate withdrawal. Fighting multiple Warans at once is a test of positioning — letting them flank means eating several fast attacks in quick succession, and the damage adds up.

Hunting Value

For convicts learning to survive outside the camp walls, Warans are a practical mark. A successful hunt yields a Waran tongue, a valuable alchemy ingredient used in a number of potions, and Waran claws, which can be sold to traders or used in crafting recipes depending on the playthrough. The tongue in particular makes the Waran worth tracking even once the Hero has grown strong enough to find them trivial.

Experienced hunters who have taken the appropriate hunting skills from trainers can field-dress kills efficiently, maximising yield from each encounter. Even later in the game, when the Hero might dispatch a Waran in a single blow, it pays to spend a few seconds skinning it before moving on.

Combat Approach

New convicts should approach Warans cautiously until their One-Handed or Two-Handed skill is at least respectable. The Waran’s speed means it can land several hits before a slow, unskilled fighter connects, and a group of them near the Old Camp’s gate has killed many an overconfident new arrival.

Effective tactics include using terrain to limit approach angles — a narrow pass, a rock face at your back — and dispatching them one at a time. A well-timed sword swing after a dodge can interrupt their attack loop cleanly. Ranged fighters can kill Warans before they close, making bows and crossbows particularly efficient against this creature.

In the Remake

Gothic 1 Remake preserves the Waran’s role as a mid-tier, common predator and sharpens its visual design into a more imposing monitor-lizard silhouette. The Remake’s reworked animation system makes the creature’s dart-and-retreat behaviour more readable in real time, rewarding players who study enemy patterns rather than button-mash. Warans remain an excellent benchmark: if the Hero can handle a pair without taking heavy damage, he is ready to push into harder territory.
