Fingers
Також відомий як: Fingers the Master Thief
Fingers is a Shadow of the Old Camp and the colony’s foremost practitioner of stealth and theft, according to Diego’s own introduction. His hut sits in the outer ring on the western side, in a canyon area close to the arena. Diego identifies him as the right trainer for those seeking to develop thieving skills during his early briefing of the Nameless Hero, and Fingers will not offer his services until that personal recommendation has been made.
Trainer Role
Fingers trains two skills: lockpicking and pickpocketing. Both require a combination of ore and learning points per lesson. Lockpicking is generally the more practically valuable of the two, since pickpocketing from NPCs yields modest and inconsistent returns in the original game. In Gothic (2001), lock-opening is handled via a directional sequence puzzle that is independent of skill level; many players relied on save states before each attempt. The Remake replaces this with a slider-style mechanic that ties more directly to skill investment. Completing training in lockpicking is sufficient to earn Fingers’ endorsement, which counts toward the threshold checked at Thorus’s gate during the Old Camp admission process.
A Ring for Fingers
In the Gothic 1 Remake, Fingers is given a dedicated quest in which he tasks the Nameless Hero with stealing a ring from a locked chest inside Scatty’s hut. Scatty’s routine takes him to the arena in the morning, leaving the hut briefly accessible. The chest requires the Hero to apply the lockpicking skill Fingers has just taught, neatly turning the quest into a practical tutorial for the new mechanic. Successfully returning the ring secures Fingers’ vote in the camp admission questline and reinforces his position as both trainer and quest giver in the revised structure.
Position Among the Shadows
Fingers is one of several named Shadows who form the specialist layer between the unguilded Digger workforce and the Guards of the Old Camp. His peers include Diego, Fisk, Cavalorn, Whistler, and Scatty. Each occupies a distinct niche: Diego handles recruitment and intelligence, Fisk runs trade, Scatty manages the arena. Fingers’ niche is criminal expertise. As a Shadow he is not subject to the daily labour expected of Diggers, nor is he required to stand gate watch like the Guards; instead his value to the camp lies in his ability to open things that are meant to stay closed.
Gothic 1 Remake Context
The Remake preserves Fingers’ essential character while integrating him more thoroughly into the structured quest log. His relationship to the revamped lockpicking system gives him a didactic function not present in the original, where the skill existed largely as a passive player investment without accompanying mentor quests. His location in the outer ring near the arena remains unchanged, keeping him a natural stop for any Hero pursuing the Shadow admission route through the Old Camp.
