The Old Camp Castle

Також відомий як: The Castle, Gomez's Castle, The Ring

The great ring-shaped castle at the heart of the Old Camp is the most imposing structure in the Valley of Mines — a former royal stronghold built at King Rhobar’s direction before the Barrier sealed the valley, and now the enthroned seat of Gomez and the ore barons who carved a brutal aristocracy out of the chaos of the convict uprising.

History

Before the revolt, the castle served as the garrison headquarters for the royal troops sent to oversee the valley’s ore extraction. When the Barrier was raised and the prisoners overwhelmed the garrison — the event known as the Great Uprising — Gomez, Raven, Bartholo, Arto, and Scar claimed the castle as their own. Its thick walls and defensible ring design, originally assets for the king’s soldiers, became the foundation of the barons’ power. The Magicians of Fire, led by Corristo, were incorporated into the inner circle, their pyromantic abilities adding a magical dimension to the barons’ military strength.

Layout and Inhabitants

The castle’s ring structure encloses a courtyard and multiple buildings. Within live the five ore barons, the Fire Mages, Gomez’s bodyguards, and the smithy that produces and repairs the weapons keeping the camp’s Guards equipped. The gate is controlled by Thorus, a Guard captain whose function is as much social as military — he decides who is admitted, and his decisions are final. Beyond the gate lies a world of privilege invisible to ordinary diggers: better food, finer accommodations, and access to the camp’s real decision-makers.

Earning Entry

For the Nameless Hero, the castle represents a significant barrier, both physical and social. Getting past Thorus requires either rising to Guard rank within the Old Camp’s joining structure, bribing him with a substantial amount of ore, or arriving bearing credentials from another faction such as the Water Mages. This gatekeeping communicates the Old Camp’s fundamental nature, where every right is earned through demonstrated allegiance or purchased outright.

The Final Assault

In Gothic’s climactic chapter, the Nameless Hero returns to the castle in force. Gomez, having alienated the Fire Mages and triggered war with the New Camp, finds his inner ring stripped of its former alliances. The Hero fights through the castle’s defenders — including Arto, Bartholo, and eventually Gomez himself — in a sequence that dismantles the regime that dominated the valley for years. In the Gothic 1 Remake, the castle’s interiors are fully redesigned with updated architecture and lighting, making the final confrontation with Gomez a more cinematic set-piece while preserving the structural beats of the original.
