Gather the Focus Stones

Chapter 3 of Gothic gives the Nameless Hero a clear and urgent objective: recover the five Focus Stones scattered across the Colony. These artefacts were used by the original thirteen mages to anchor the Barrier when it was first raised, and the Water Mages — led by Saturas — believe that recovering them, alongside a lost almanac describing how to recharge their energy, will unlock the key to bringing the Barrier down and freeing everyone trapped inside the valley.

The Stones and Their Origins

When the mages cast the ritual that sealed the Colony, the Focus Stones served as anchoring points — physical concentrations of magical energy distributed across the valley to stabilise the dome of the Barrier. After the initial chaos of the sealing, the stones were scattered: some ended up in dangerous locations, some were left among the ruins of Orcish or ancient human sites, and at least one was left in a canyon overrun by trolls. Saturas sends the Hero to retrieve all five, a mission that doubles as a guided tour of the Colony’s most hostile corners.

A Hunt Across the Valley

Each Focus Stone recovery is a self-contained challenge. Some require completing smaller quests to earn the trust or defeat the relevant figure who holds the stone; others demand navigating combat-heavy locations. The search takes the Hero into the Orc territory around the ancient standing stones, into ruined monastic sites, and into the infamous troll canyon that claims many unprepared adventurers. No two stones are retrieved the same way, which makes Chapter 3 the most exploratory chapter in the game — a deliberate stretch of open-ended content between the faction politics of the opening chapters and the escalating urgency of the endgame.

The Almanac

Alongside the stones, the Hero must also secure a mages’ almanac — a scholarly text that explains how the Focus Stones’ energy can be recharged once depleted. Without the almanac, the stones are physical curiosities; with it, Saturas has a working theory for how to use them. Tracking down this text is woven into the Focus Stone quest and sends the Hero into additional locations he might not otherwise visit.

Why It Matters

The Focus Stone quest is Gothic’s central mid-game spine. Completing it represents the New Camp’s best hope for dismantling the Barrier — the plan that every faction in the Colony is either supporting, exploiting, or trying to prevent. But gathering the stones also draws the Hero deeper into the truth the game is slowly revealing: that the Sect Camp’s ritual to wake the Sleeper is far more dangerous than anyone in the camps has acknowledged. The hunt for the Focus Stones is where Gothic transitions from a survival story into an epic.
