Bartholo
Bartholo is one of the five Ore Barons who rule the Old Camp, the inner circle of convict leaders who exploited the chaos of the Barrier’s creation to seize power in the Valley of Mines. Among the five — Gomez, Raven, Arto, Scar, and Bartholo — his designated function is the management of trade and external commerce, making him the logistical backbone of the camp’s economic arrangements with the outside world.
Role as Trade Administrator
The Old Camp’s survival depends on its monthly ore shipments to King Rhobar II. In exchange for approximately 200 bags of magic ore per month, the kingdom sends food, weapons, equipment, and other supplies through the Barrier at the Exchange Zone. Bartholo is the baron responsible for overseeing this trade: tracking ore quantities, managing commercial relations, and ensuring the supply chain functions. This role makes him simultaneously one of the camp’s most important figures and, in a limited sense, one of its more approachable — trade requires structured interaction with multiple parties, and Bartholo is not as violently dismissive as some of his peers.
The Storeroom
Bartholo administers the camp’s primary storeroom, located in the basement of the Ore Barons’ Residence. This space holds both imported goods from the kingdom and ore portions awaiting distribution or shipment. Bartholo holds the key to this storeroom, making him the gatekeeper to a logistically significant and practically tempting location. A Nameless Hero with reason to access the storeroom must deal with Bartholo — by persuading him, finding another route, or confronting him directly.
The Great Uprising
Bartholo was one of the original conspirators of the Great Uprising, the coordinated revolt through which Gomez and his allies turned the Barrier’s creation into an opportunity. When the magical dome sealed the valley and disrupted the royal garrison’s ability to respond, Gomez’s group moved decisively, killing the remaining soldiers and seizing the castle. This action established the ore baron hierarchy, and Bartholo’s participation in it gives him a founding claim on the camp’s power structure equal to any of his peers.
Fate
In the game’s final act, when the Nameless Hero assaults the Old Camp to reach Gomez, Bartholo is among the defenders killed in the process. He dies alongside Arto in the fight through the castle that culminates in Gomez’s defeat. His death marks the end of the five-man oligarchy that has ruled the valley since the day of the revolt.
