The Exchange Zone
Also known as: The Drop, Exchange Point
The Exchange Zone is the liminal space at the base of the Barrier where the Kingdom of Myrtana and the Colony connect — and where the Nameless Hero’s story begins. It is a rough clearing beneath the dome of magical energy, defined by two functions: the drop point where new convicts arrive from above, and the trade mechanism through which the Old Camp sends ore outward and receives supplies from the outside world.
Arrival
The game opens with the Nameless Hero being thrown through the Barrier by two royal guards, landing hard in the Exchange Zone. He carries nothing of value and is immediately accosted by Bullit, a Guard, and several companions who beat him and take what little he has. This moment establishes the Colony’s operating principle before a single line of dialogue is delivered: in the Valley of Mines, power belongs to those who take it, and no one is coming to help. The opening is one of the most distinctive cold opens in European RPG history, and the Remake preserves it deliberately.
The Trade Infrastructure
Despite its brutal atmosphere, the Exchange Zone serves a commercial function that sustains the entire Old Camp. King Rhobar’s arrangement with the ore barons works through this location: ore mined in the valley is loaded into containers and passed through the Barrier, after which the kingdom deposits food, weapons, equipment, beverages, and other supplies in exchange. Guards like Bullit manage this transfer physically. The zone is therefore simultaneously the Colony’s connection to civilisation and its most visible reminder of captivity — goods arrive, prisoners do not leave.
Diego and First Contact
The Nameless Hero’s rescue from Bullit’s harassment comes at the hands of Diego, a Shadow of the Old Camp who becomes the player’s first mentor figure. Diego’s intervention is not selfless — he has been instructed to scout new arrivals for those who might be useful — but his explanation of the valley’s three camps, the function of the Barrier, and the Colony’s basic social dynamics constitutes the game’s tutorial. He hands over a letter of recommendation to Gomez, setting the Nameless Hero’s first concrete objective.
Gothic 1 Remake
The Remake expands the Exchange Zone opening into a more elaborate and more polished sequence, with updated character animations, voice acting, and environmental detail that make the Colony’s brutality viscerally present. Bullit’s confrontation, Diego’s intervention, and the initial orientation dialogue are given significantly more production weight. The zone also serves as the entry point for the standalone Nyras Prologue demo, which shows the same location from a different character’s perspective and introduces the Remake’s tone to new players.
