Chapter 5: The Free Mine and Beyond

Also known as: Chapter 5, Gothic 1 Chapter 5, The Free Mine and Beyond

Chapter 5 takes the Nameless Hero to the most dangerous corners of the colony: the ancient northern mines and the orc lands that surround them. It is the longest and most combat-intensive expedition of the game, a sustained push through hostile territory to recover the weapons capable of banishing a demon.

The Ulu-Mulu

Crossing orc territory without being immediately destroyed requires the Ulu-Mulu, a ceremonial staff assembled from components that orcs recognise as a mark of alliance or at least truce. Collecting the required parts and having the staff properly blessed is a prerequisite for safe passage through orc settlements and past orc patrols. Without it, the northern regions are effectively impassable at any reasonable point in the hero’s development. The Ulu-Mulu quest rewards players who have maintained broad contacts across the colony, as some components are held by specific characters in different camps.

Recovering Uriziel and the Eye of Innos

The chapter’s main objectives are the broken sword Uriziel and the holy artifact called the Eye of Innos, both located in orc-held ruins and the buried temple complex that sits beneath the northern territories. Neither item is battle-ready when found. Uriziel is damaged and must be brought to the Fire Mages for re-tempering, a process requiring ore and a Focus Stone to complete. The Eye of Innos must similarly be reconsecrated before it can function against a demon. The Free Mine and its adjacent passages form the primary approach route, their corridors populated by some of the game’s most demanding enemies.

Enemies and Challenges

Chapter 5 presents the colony at its most hostile. Orc warriors and shamans defend the northern ruins, undead populate the deep mine passages, and shadowbeasts roam the open terrain in greater numbers than anywhere seen earlier. Several routes that were passable in earlier chapters now carry significantly stronger enemy compositions, and the hero is expected to be among the game’s more developed builds before attempting the push north. Loot quality is correspondingly high: rare weapons, armour, and ore veins appear in the side chambers of the orc temple and surrounding ruins, rewarding thorough exploration.

Preparation for Chapter 6

Chapter 5 ends when both Uriziel and the Eye of Innos are fully restored by their respective mages. At this point restocking becomes critical, because the temple that serves as Chapter 6’s setting offers almost no opportunity to revisit trainers, purchase supplies, or rest once the hero enters. Carrying a deep stock of healing potions and fully charged teleport runes before committing is strongly advisable. Back in the colony, the Sect under Cor Kalom has sealed the Swamp Camp entirely as the awakening ritual approaches completion, and the Remake expands the visual design of the northern orc ruins while preserving the chapter’s structure as a sustained expedition through progressive danger.
