Milten

Milten is the youngest Magician of Fire in the Old Camp and the most approachable member of a circle otherwise marked by arrogance and exclusivity — the Hero’s principal magical ally and one of his four oldest friends.

Talent and Admission

Milten’s presence in the Fire Mage circle is unusual enough to require explanation. The Magicians of Fire, led by Corristo, are not an order given to accepting young or unproven candidates; their status within the camp depends partly on projecting exclusivity. Corristo broke with that tradition when he recognized something exceptional in Milten — a degree of natural magical aptitude that outstripped his age by a significant margin — and personally campaigned to have him admitted. The arrangement made Milten Corristo’s student, binding him to the most senior Fire Mage and giving him both protection and access to advanced training that few convicts inside the Barrier could dream of.

Among the Four Friends

Milten shared a prison cell in Khorinis with Diego, Gorn and Lester, the four of them cast into the Barrier together roughly two years before the game begins. Of the group, Milten drew the most comfortable assignment: the Old Camp’s Fire Mage circle sits near the top of the camp’s social hierarchy, above the Guards and well above the Diggers and ordinary convicts. Unlike Diego’s street-level operations or Gorn’s mercenary patrols, Milten’s daily life consists largely of magical study and the political navigation of life among proud, competitive mages. He maintains his friendships across camp lines — a delicate balancing act in a settlement where associating with rivals can attract dangerous attention from Gomez’s loyalists.

Point of Contact and Magical Ally

Where Corristo and the other Fire Mages treat the Hero with suspicion or indifference, Milten is genuinely willing to help. He serves as the Hero’s entry point into the circle, explaining how the mage hierarchy functions, what the Fire Mages know about the Barrier and the Focus Stones, and what concrete assistance they can offer. Practically, he provides scrolls, runes and spell knowledge, and his counsel becomes increasingly valuable as the Sleeper conspiracy escalates from rumor to crisis. His approachability is not naivety — Milten understands the camp’s politics perfectly — but reflects a genuine concern for the colony’s people that his colleagues conspicuously lack.

Survival and the Broader Series

The Fire Mages’ story ends violently: when Gomez orders an assault on the New Camp to compensate for the collapsed Old Mine and Corristo refuses, Gomez has the entire circle executed. Milten alone survives this catastrophe. Whether through luck, the intervention of friends or simply being away from the wrong place at the wrong moment, he escapes the purge and carries his abilities and loyalty into Gothic II and the games that follow, where he remains one of the Hero’s most valued and trusted companions.
