Corristo
Corristo is the leader of the Magicians of Fire in the Old Camp — one of the mages who created the Barrier, a proud and principled man whose opposition to Gomez’s most brutal order costs him his life.
One of the Thirteen
When King Rhobar II needed a magical solution to the labor problem in the mines of Khorinis, thirteen of Myrtana’s most accomplished mages combined their abilities to project a containment barrier over the Valley of Mines. The spell went out of control — disturbed by the distant influence of the Sleeper lying dormant beneath the valley — and all thirteen were trapped inside the dome alongside the ten thousand convicts they had meant to contain. Corristo was among them. When the prisoners revolted and the three-camp structure emerged from the chaos, the Fire Mages settled in the Old Camp alongside the new Ore Baron hierarchy. With Xardas gone — the thirteenth and most powerful mage having withdrawn into the orc lands to pursue necromancy — Corristo became the senior Fire Mage and the effective leader of the circle.
Mentor and Circle Leader
Corristo’s most lasting personal contribution to Gothic 1 is his recognition of the young Milten. Milten arrived in the colony without rank, standing or any magical credentials, but possessed a level of raw aptitude that Corristo identified as exceptional. He persuaded the other Fire Mages to accept Milten into the circle — a significant act in a group not given to open doors — and took him on as his personal student, shaping the youngest mage’s training and providing him protection in a camp where unaffiliated convicts had very little of either. The relationship is one of the few genuinely mentoring bonds in the game and reveals a generosity in Corristo that his formal pride does not usually put on display.
Disputes and the New Camp’s Origins
Corristo’s long-running conflict with Saturas, the Water Mage leader, is central to the colony’s prehistory. The two men disagreed about the nature of the Barrier, the properties of magic ore and — fundamentally — about Gomez. Saturas and five other Water Mages eventually chose to leave the Old Camp rather than continue providing magical knowledge to a tyrant whose demands would only grow. Their departure to found the New Camp was at least partly a direct consequence of Corristo’s inability or unwillingness to bridge that dispute, making his pride partly responsible for the colony’s fractured state.
Death at Gomez’s Order
When the Old Mine collapses and the ore supply that sustains Gomez’s deal with King Rhobar II fails, Gomez orders an attack on the New Camp’s Free Mine. Corristo refuses to sanction the assault — one of the very few times anyone inside the castle openly defies Gomez’s orders. The response is immediate: Gomez has Corristo and the entire Magician of Fire circle executed. Milten alone survives. Corristo’s death removes the last internal check on Gomez’s power and accelerates the Old Camp’s spiral toward the violent endgame the Hero must resolve.
