Old Camp
Also known as: Altes Lager, The Camp
The Old Camp is the oldest, largest and wealthiest of the three convict settlements in the Valley of Mines in Gothic 1 (2001) and its 2026 remake. Built around a fortified former royal castle, it is the dominant political and economic power inside the Barrier and serves as one of three joinable factions — the most hierarchically rigid and ideologically conservative of them all.
History and Origins
When the Barrier was cast and spun out of control, trapping both convicts and their royal guards inside, a convict named Gomez seized the moment of chaos to lead a revolt against the original wardens. He rewarded those who had supported the uprising with elevated positions; these men became the Ore Barons, and Gomez emerged as the most powerful among them. The camp established an exclusive trade arrangement with King Rhobar II outside: roughly 200 bags of magic ore are shipped out each month via the exchange zone at the Barrier’s edge, and in return the Old Camp receives food, weapons, tools, beverages and other goods. This arrangement is the foundation of the Old Camp’s wealth and the source of its political leverage over the other factions, who benefit from no such deal.
Social Hierarchy
The Old Camp’s society is organized in strictly enforced tiers. At the apex are Gomez and the Ore Barons: Raven serves as Gomez’s right hand and enforcer, Bartholo manages the trade and supply flow, while Arto and Scar act as personal bodyguards. Below the Barons sit the Magicians of Fire, led by Corristo, who provide magical authority and handle the mystical aspects of the camp’s operation. The Guards — under the command of Thorus — police the outer ring, man checkpoints, and collect tribute from vendors. Working the Old Mine are the Diggers, the camp’s lowest acknowledged class. The Shadows occupy a distinctive niche: privileged free agents — among them Diego, Fisk, Sly and Whistler — who trade, gather intelligence and carry out tasks requiring deniability, answering ultimately to the Barons.
Joining as a Player and Available Guilds
A player choosing the Old Camp can join as a Guard (the melee-focused path, under Thorus) or as a Magician of Fire (the magic path, under Corristo). Guard admission requires completing Diego’s trust chain, earning the approval of multiple Shadows, and passing the camp’s test-of-faith ritual. Fire Mage admission requires significant magical aptitude and the recommendation of Corristo and the circle. Trainers accessible to Old Camp members include Thorus for weapon skills and strength, and Corristo for the fire circles of magic.
Ideology and Downfall
The Old Camp’s governing ideology is status quo preservation: the arrangement with the King works, the ore flows, and disrupting it — as the New Camp’s breakout plan would — threatens everything Gomez has built. This conservatism becomes a fatal weakness when the Old Mine collapses. Facing economic ruin, Gomez orders an armed attack on the New Camp’s Free Mine to maintain the ore supply. Corristo and the Magicians of Fire refuse to sanction the assault; Gomez, enraged, has the mages executed — an act that alienates his magical advisors and accelerates the camp’s collapse when the Nameless Hero arrives to confront him. In the 2026 remake the Old Camp’s castle and outer ring are among the world’s most visually realized areas, rebuilt with Nanite geometry.
