The Old Mine
Also known as: The Old Mine
The Old Mine is the largest and oldest ore working in the Valley of Mines, held by the Old Camp and the foundation on which the ore barons’ power rests. Situated in the northern section of the valley, its tunnels descend deep beneath the rock, yielding the magical ore that King Rhobar II depends on to arm his forces against the Orcs. The camp’s diggers — convicts who chose the barons’ shelter over the alternatives — toil in its shafts under the watchful eyes of the Guard, trading their labour for food, protection, and a roof.
Work and Daily Life
The miners who work the Old Mine occupy the bottom of the Old Camp’s social order. They receive their share of the goods traded through the Barrier but enjoy little freedom and no meaningful share of the ore’s value. The Guard’s presence is coercive as much as protective: diggers who cause trouble are dealt with harshly. Despite this, the mine hums with activity, and its foremen — including figures the Nameless Hero must deal with during the Old Camp’s joining quest — are key interlocutors for players on that story path.
Minecrawlers and Sect Interest
The Old Mine’s tunnels are also home to minecrawlers, insect-like creatures that infest the deeper passages. Their secretions are prized by the Brotherhood of the Sleeper for ritual use, and crawler eggs command a price at the Sect Camp. This gives the mine a secondary significance beyond mere ore extraction: Sect Templars and traders pass through or near its approaches to acquire the biological materials Cor Kalom requires. The Nameless Hero, regardless of which camp he joins, is likely to visit the mine at least once on errands connected to these materials.
The Collapse and Its Consequences
Halfway through the events of Gothic, the Old Mine caves in catastrophically, sealing the tunnels and cutting off the ore barons’ primary income stream. The collapse is the precipitating crisis that drives the second half of the story. Without ore to trade, the Old Camp cannot maintain its supply agreements with the kingdom, and Gomez — unwilling to surrender power — orders an assault on the Free Mine held by the New Camp. This decision shatters whatever fragile accommodation existed between the two major factions and draws the Fire Mages into open opposition against the barons.
Gothic 1 Remake
In the Remake, the Old Mine is significantly expanded as a location, with additional interior spaces, richer atmosphere, and NPC interactions that flesh out the lives of diggers. The collapse sequence is handled as a scripted event visible to the player, making its consequences feel immediate rather than merely reported through dialogue. The mine’s deeper tunnels and the minecrawler ecosystem are rendered with far greater environmental detail than the original’s engine could produce.
