Troll
Also known as: Troll, Black Troll
The Troll is one of the most formidable creatures in all of Gothic — a towering humanoid giant of stone-grey or moss-covered hide that stands several times the height of a grown man. Trolls lair in remote forest clearings, rocky mountain wilderness, and the most inaccessible stretches of the valley, far from any camp. Few prisoners seek them out willingly. Among the colony’s convicts, successfully killing a troll is regarded as a rare achievement, the mark of a seasoned and well-equipped fighter.
Lore and Habitat
Trolls haunt the untravelled fringes of the prison valley — the deep forests, the high ridges, the ruined corners no one visits unless they must. They are solitary creatures, apparently not organized in packs or tribes, though their sheer scale means a single specimen dominates a large territory. The colony’s inhabitants give them a wide berth, and a troll’s enormous footprints in the mud or a shattered tree are enough to send even veteran guards on a longer route. The creature’s imposing form and distant, threatening silhouette signal clearly that the player has wandered into territory meant for the late game.
Combat
A troll fights with sweeping blows of its colossal arms, each strike capable of killing a well-armoured warrior in two or three hits and flinging the body a considerable distance. Its health pool is enormous — the fight is long even when everything goes right — and it has enough reach that closing distance is itself dangerous. The troll’s movements are slow and ponderous, however, and that telegraphing is the sole opening a careful fighter can exploit. The recommended approach is to soften the creature at range with a bow or scrolls before engaging in melee, then kite between its wide, committed swings — attacking in the gap and resetting before the next blow arrives. Attempting a troll before the late game, without good weapons and a stock of healing potions, is effectively suicide.
Variants and Drops
The wilderness also holds the rarer and more dangerous Black Troll, a darker-hued variant that hits harder still and represents one of the valley’s genuine apex threats. Both variants yield valuable trophy parts on death, and the experience reward for bringing one down is among the best in the game. Hunters and traders prize troll components, making the hunt worthwhile for players willing to prepare properly. In the Remake, updated creature rendering and animations make the moment of first encounter with a troll genuinely striking — a living landmark that marks the boundary between the colony’s semi-civilized territory and the wild beyond it.
